As part of the week leading to the installation of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Chancellor Julie Furst-Bowe, the University community will be abuzz with excitement.
The SIUE College of Arts and Sciences will host a two-day colloquium, Monday and Tuesday, April 15-16, titled, “Thinking About the Book.” The event will feature papers from SIUE faculty members. The papers will focus on a variety of topics—from how universities in other countries teach in the absence of having textbooks to the evolution and future of the book itself.
Events will take place as part of the colloquium across campus. “Book Making and the Making of the Book: Selections from Lovejoy Library’s Special Collections” will take place on the first floor of Lovejoy Library throughout Monday. Also on Monday, special topics, including SIUE faculty scholarship in the first decade, self-publishing in the new traditional publishing method, creative writing, a banned book rescue and more will be explored.
Tuesday will include continued discussions on some of the same topics, as well as a bus tour of East St. Louis from 9:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m., and an afternoon discussion with CAS faculty authors who will share their experiences about writing and publishing from 2-3 p.m.
Keynote speaker David Sedaris will dazzle audiences as part of the CAS colloquium and the SIUE Department of English Language and Literature’s “The Year of the Book” initiative. The event, which is part of the University’s Arts & Issues series, will close out the colloquium at 7:30 p.m. in the Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom. Sedaris is a three-time Grammy nominated author. The event is sponsored by the SIUE Graduate School and the Madison County Regional Office of Education.
