glushko-annaSouthern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Anna Glushko and Heidi Quiggle were among eight winners in The Get to Know Metro East $2,000 scholarship essay contest. Award-winning essays highlighted why students love living in the Metro East.

Glushko, a teaching assistant for the Department of Psychology in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, lives in Godfrey. She is a graduate student studying industrial-organizational psychology. Glushko wove a Wizard of Oz theme into her glowing tribute to the Metro East.

Quiggle serves as a research assistant in the Department of Social Work within the College of Arts and Sciences, and lives in Belleville. She is working with the Permanency Enhancement Project to identify barriers to permanency for foster children throughout Southern Illinois. Quiggle wrote of her preference for living in the Metro East after moving to Godfrey from Southern California.

Two recipients from each of the five host sponsor universities and colleges received awards. Along with SIUE, the educational institutions receiving the scholarships were: Lindenwood University-Belleville, McKendree University in Lebanon and Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville. Winners were based on their applications and essays submitted last fall.

Winners were selected from more than 150 applicants. Criteria included being a resident of the Metro East at the time of application, enrolled as a full-time student and in good standing with the institution.

quiggle-heidiAccording to Carol Bartle, project manager of the Get to Know m.e. campaign, supporting the educational experience for young adults does wonders. “The campaign was launched to give something positive back to the community,” she said. “We are dedicated to education, and the scholarships are just one more way we are committed to the students living and learning in our many wonderful communities.”

The scholarships are part of the campaign’s initiative to complete projects throughout the Metro East that improve lives, promote the area or positively impact the campaign and its missions. The students are able to apply the scholarships to the 2016 spring semester.

The positive-image campaign was launched to celebrate the many reasons people love living and working in the Metro East. It works to help bring awareness to everyone living in and out of the area. The campaign encourages broader understanding of the many communities that make up the Metro East, and all the resources and attractions they have to offer.
