Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Charter High School (CHS) seniors asked questions about admission requirements, financial aid, dorm roommates and social activities at SIUE’s Pre Collegiate Program, hosted by the University’s Office of Academic Advising.
“It’s important that the Charter High School students identify, understand and differentiate the various parts of the college acceptance and selection process,” said Makesha Harris, EdD, Pre Collegiate Program coordinator and academic advisor.
Seventeen CHS students spent half the day at SIUE and were instructed about admission procedures by Admissions Counselor Ashlei White and provided University Housing information by Housing Marketing Specialist Kira Long.
“Understanding and navigating the financial piece of college is crucial,” said White. “I always stress the importance of filing for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to students.”
The students also broke into groups and spent time talking to SIUE advisors about the following expressed majors:
- Health professions and nursing
- Biological sciences and pre medicine
- Business
- Psychology and social work
- Engineering
- Undeclared
“I’m looking forward to coming to SIUE,” said Aareon Rice, CHS student who wants to study aerospace engineering. “I got an opportunity to meet and talk with aerospace engineers when Upward Bound took a trip to Boeing last summer.” Rice is a student in the SIUE East St. Louis Center Upward Bound BEM Program.
“I like dealing with planes, and I like to build things,” Rice added. “I don’t know what it is about the sky, but I love being in the air. I plan to start my own airline company one day.”
