“The work of diversity and inclusion at its core is about making sure that every student enrolled at SIUE feels a sense of belonging, knowing that this is a place that’s safe for their growing, learning and development, and that’s our goal.”
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s new Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion (CSDI) is offering that safe space, along with support and advocacy for underrepresented students. It underscores the University’s commitment to students’ well-being and success, according to CSDI Director Timothy Staples, EdD.
The CSDI, located on the second floor of the Morris University Center, will host a community gathering from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Chancellor Randy Pembrook will offer opening remarks.
“It is my honor to bring collaborative leadership to this new initiative,” said Staples, an SIUE alumnus. “The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion will serve multiple purposes for our students, staff and faculty, but particularly our students. It is a place for them to come, relax and have conversations with others.”
“It will also be a space that provides cultural teaching and learning through new programming,” he continued. “We intend to serve as a resource for those seeking mentorship, as well as individuals who want to explore their culture and learn about others. We’re also excited to enhance campus celebrations surrounding history and cultural months.”
Staples notes the passion shared by SIUE community members for student learning and success that will contribute to the positive impact of the CSDI.
“One, two or three people cannot do all diversity and inclusion work by themselves,” he said. “As a collaborative leader, I plan to open opportunities for others to share their talents and connect with our students in meaningful ways.”
