Southern Illinois University Edwardsville alumnus Timothy Minnick has achieved some incredible, high-flying feats in his lifetime, some of which have gained national media attention.
A recent $10,000 win on the CBS reality television show Million Dollar Mile and a 2014 appearance on NBC’s American Ninja Warrior are a couple that stand out.
But, what many probably don’t know is that Minnick is more than a physical artist. The reality star, Bethalto police officer and Shinobi Fitness owner earned a bachelor’s in art/art studio from SIUE in 2002.
“Little did I know that I would become a police officer, but later still be able to use my graphic design and art experience here at Shinobi Fitness,” Minnick said. “Basically, everything in the gym I’ve built, designed and painted myself.”
Minnick is an inspiration to adults and kids alike as he leads by example, proving the possibilities in life are endless, regardless of any literal or metaphorical obstacles that may be present.
“Growing up, I was the kid that was climbing trees, not as into the secular sports I played,” he said. “Obstacle training was a great outlet for me. You have to go back to your primal instincts on how to move and understand your body. That feeling of, ‘I just overcame a literal obstacle,’ unlike the metaphorical obstacles in our daily lives, really helps a lot of people.”
Whether designing or conquering warped walls, salmon ladders or circuit boards, Minnick’s artistic talent in all its forms is on display at Shinobi Fitness in Bethalto.
He remains committed to a community mentality, and extends special offers to SIUE students interested in obstacle training. SIUE students receive a discounted rate and $20 off their membership.
