The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Nursing will be offering Legislative Night 2014 Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 6-9 p.m. at the N.O. Nelson Building in Edwardsville. The event will examine current and upcoming legislative issues in the Illinois General Assembly related to nursing and health care.
The featured speaker is Debbie Broadfield of Capitol Edge Consulting, representative of ANA-Illinois, Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing and Illinois Association of Colleges of Nursing. She will discuss legislative outcomes of 2014 and legislative plans for 2015.
On-site registration begins at 5:30 p.m. Networking and light appetizers and refreshments catered by Bella Milano continue until 6:20 p.m.
Dr. Karen Kelly, RN, NEA-BC, director of Continuing Education and associate professor in the SIUE School of Nursing, will provide the opening remarks with an overview of political action and nursing. She is also the past/founding president of ANA-Illinois and is a member of the Illinois Healthcare Action Coalition coordinating committee.
After Broadfield’s 6:30 p.m. presentation, Susan Swart of the Illinois Healthcare Action Coalition will focus on nursing’s future in Illinois at 7:30 p.m. Swart, MSN, RN, CAE, is executive director of ANA-Illinois, a member of Illinois Nurses Foundation and Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nurses, and sits on the executive council of the Illinois Healthcare Action Coalition.
The final speaker at 7:40 p.m. is Donna Meyer who will address the RWJF/AARP Campaign for Nursing. Meyer, MSN, RN, is dean of Health Sciences at Lewis & Clark Community College. She is also president of the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing and a member of the RWJF Academic Progression in Nursing advisory committee.
The evening will close with an introduction of members of the Illinois General Assembly and a networking session with legislators and professional colleagues
The registration fee is $12 for undergraduate, pre-licensure students and $25 for RNs and other attendees. Students must provide proof of current enrollment at on-site registration unless they have been registered through their nursing program/instructor. The registration fee includes all handouts and refreshments. Free parking is available adjacent to the building.
