SIUE track and field and cross country teams participated in the Wag N Walk 5K Run on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens in Glen Carbon. The service project benefits the Metro-East Humane Society.
The project aligns with the Department of Athletics’ “Community Matters” initiative. The student-athletes served as course marshals and finish line workers.
“It’s not only about giving back to the community, but also remembering we wouldn’t exist without the support of the community,” said Head Coach Eileen McAllister. “We are members of the community and as such have a responsibility to contribute just as we expect each of our athletes to do on a team level.”
This is the sixth year that the teams have supported the Metro-East Humane Society.
“It’s easy to get tunnel vision,” said McAllister. “Community service is one method we use to remember to see the big picture.”
