Students, teachers and staff from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Charter High School (CHS) will dress in pink and join others on Friday for the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Assembly and Walk.
“I am proud of the senior class for spearheading this very important day and helping to bring to mind the critical need for breast cancer awareness,” said Gina Washington, CHS director.
CHS is hosting the event, along with the East St. Louis Community College Center. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Multipurpose Theater in Building D at the East St. Louis Higher Education Campus.
The annual event is a CHS senior class service project and all 32 seniors will participate, said Kimberly Allen, CHS special education teacher. CHS 2015 Class Officers and Juan Bean, student services representative for the East St. Louis Community College, planned the day of commemoration.
“My adamant mission for raising the awareness for cancer arrives from an up close and personal position,” said Bean. “Both my mother and great grandmother are survivors. Now my overall dedication is to help provide resources and information to others as the cure for the cancer continues.”
Tomorrow’s program will include:
• De’Ambra Loveless, CHS junior, will dance to “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” by Whitney Houston
• Arturo Miller, former CHS student, will dance to “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith
• Desmond Porter, CHS junior, will read an original poem
• The CHS gospel choir, will sing “In Awe of You” by Tray McLaughlin
• Keynote speaker by Rona White of St. Louis, a breast cancer survivor
Following the program, participants will walk around the East St. Louis Higher Education Campus. During the activities, donations will be received for Susan G. Komen.
