James Hinson, Music

Mixtures of light and intense musical numbers are planned for tomorrow’s Faculty Recital at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Dr. James M. Hinson, professor of Music, will present a free recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Dunham Hall, room 1109. Hinson is also coordinator of Winds, Brass and Percussion in the Department of Music.

The program will feature two fun, upbeat, flashy/virtuosic works — “Carnival of Venice” and “Clarinet Polka.” “Clarinet Polka” will also include 10 SIUE clarinet students.

Also on program are more serious works such as: the Brahms “Sonata in F minor” and a work by living composer Karel Husa called “Élégie et Rondeau.”

After the 45-minute concert, Hinson will host a catered reception that will include free bratwurst for those who attend the recital.

Hinson received the B.M. degree in performance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the M.M. degree from the Juilliard School, and D.M. degree from Florida State University. His teachers have included Joseph Allard, Robert Listokin, Donald Oehler, and Frank Kowalsky.

Hinson has performed as clarinetist with the National Orchestra of New York, the Charleston Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Illinois Symphony and the Breckenridge Music Festival in Breckenridge, Colo.

Many of Hinson’s clarinet and saxophone students have won principal positions in performing ensembles including the St. Louis Youth Symphony, the Illinois All-State Honors Orchestra, the Illinois All-State Band, and the Missouri-Illinois Bi-State Band.
