Jabari Danzy’s header in the 108th minute of play lifted SIUE past Missouri State 1-0 in double overtime to capture its first Missouri Valley Conference championship Sunday afternoon at Bradley University’s Shea Stadium in Peoria. Danzy’s game winner vaulted SIUE into the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship.
The Cougars will travel to Northwestern on Thursday, Nov. 20, for a first round match. The winner advances to face California, the overall No. 15 seed, on Sunday, Nov. 23.
Danzy, who also scored the game-winning goal in Friday’s semifinal against Bradley was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
SIUE controlled the possession throughout much of the game and finished with a 17-9 edge in shots.
Kent Kobernus posted his fifth shutout of the season and eighth of his career.
