Scott Sexton, a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy second-year professional student, was elected as the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) Region 4 delegate at the APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meeting. This is the first time the SIUE School of Pharmacy has held a national position in this student organization.
“I am filled with honor and excitement to be the new Region 4 delegate,” said Sexton.
“Those who attended the meeting indicated Sexton was the strongest candidate with conviction for pharmacy, as he understood the importance of student pharmacists’ ability to shape the future,” said Dr. Jessica Kerr, assistant professor at SIUE’s School of Pharmacy and faculty adviser for APhA-ASP. “Scott’s ability to engage all of his classmates on our campus was obviously evident, which lead to his election.”
Sexton’s primary responsibility during the 2014-2015 year will be to promote policy and advocacy activities for pharmacy within the region. Additionally, he will serve on the APhA-ASP Resolutions Committee and assist the APhA-ASP Speaker of the House in document preparation and communications.
“I ran on a platform of Unity Through Policy and plan to reach out to my regional chapters to spark talks of policies that have the ability to impact our entire region,” Sexton said.
The APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meetings (MRM) are held every fall for each of the eight national regions across the country. The meeting offers networking, professional and leadership development, and educational programming designed exclusively for student pharmacists.
Students from each region discuss legislative policy process and elect regional officers to support the national organization’s mission for policy and to develop the student voice of pharmacy.
