The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees at its regularly scheduled meeting today on the Carbondale campus approved the development of plans and cost estimates for the renovation of both Founders Hall and Alumni Hall on the Edwardsville campus.
In additional actions, the Board approved budgets to remodel the student laboratory in School of Dental Medicine’s Dental Clinic Building on the Alton campus and the resurfacing of Circle Drive on the Edwardsville campus. The Board also approved a $2 million, six-year contract with ISS Facility Services of Maryland Heights, Mo., to provide cleaning services to Cougar Village apartments along with Bluff, Prairie and Woodland Halls on the Edwardsville campus.
Both Founders and Alumni Hall are more than 40-years-old and while having been adequately maintained, the primary electrical, plumbing, window and mechanical systems are original equipment. The buildings were also not designed to meet current life safety, energy and seismic codes. Plans will review designs and costs for major renovation of the buildings’ systems. A qualifications based selection (QBS) process will be conducted to select an architectural firm. The project will be funded from the facilities fee.
For the dental lab renovation, a QBS process resulted in selecting Bric Partnership of Belleville as the engineering consultant for the project design. The estimated cost is $600,000, and will be funded by the dental clinic operations fund and the dental equipment fee. The renovation will include replacing existing dental casework, including provisions for ADA compliance, ceiling pads and general illumination lighting along with new electrical, natural gas and compressed air for each lab station.
For the Circle Drive resurfacing project, a QBS process was used to select Hurste-Rosche of Hillsboro as the civil engineering consultant for the design. The project’s estimated cost is $1.2 million and will be funded from the facilities fee. The traffic heavy Circle Drive is not only in need resurfacing, but also new pavement markings and curb ramps.
The ISS Facility Services contract’s total cost is $2,040,000 and will be funded through University Housing Operating funds. SIUE retains a cleaning service to prepare student housing for occupancy, as full cleaning is required whenever students move out.
